Location: Centre A Gallery, 229 East Georgia Street

Creative Dominion is pleased to present Governor General award-winning playwright David Yee's lady in the red dress, as a pared down workshop production — stripped bare of elaborate scenery or props— that seeks to uncover the raw emotion and brutality behind the Chinese Head Tax and Exclusion Act. The intimate space of CENTRE A Gallery: Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, will allow performers to meet audiences face-to-face, wrestling through social issues within close proximity to each other.

In many ways, David Yee's lady in the red dress is a director's dream: a contemporary Canadian play that comes complete with recognizable archetypes and brutally honest, social commentary. Set in the time frame between 1923, 1946 and 2006, the play follows the journey of its principal protagonist, Max Lochran. Audiences follow the civil servant as he relives the past, working through dark familial secrets while facing his own, deeply engrained assumptions and prejudices. Written in film-noir style, the play moves deftly between dream-states and obscure fantasy, at times, with biting humour, and yet the play keeps clear sight of its focus by speaking to a history of social injustice and cultural exclusion.
